Module Alpha covers sorting and stream quality before the recycling process itself. It is neither a food safety certificate nor authorisation to use the final material in contact with food.
Module Alpha applies at the sorting stage
Sorting Process Certification covers the origin, receipt, sorting and traceability of plastic waste. Module Alpha extends this scope for relevant streams sent for further recycling linked to food-contact applications.
Why does the earlier stage matter?
The quality of recycling input depends on the waste source, collection method, sorting and contamination controls. Errors at this stage can affect whether the stream can be used in subsequent processes.
What remains outside the scope?
Module Alpha does not replace the subsequent recycling or decontamination process, or the legal requirements for the final plastic intended for food contact.
Which elements are particularly important?
- documented waste origin;
- an appropriate collection system;
- the stream specification;
- quality and contamination controls;
- batch traceability;
- storage that limits the mixing of incompatible streams;
- quantity data and reconciliation.
The boundary between Sorting Process and Recycling Process
Sorting Process ends with the appropriate preparation and separation of a waste stream. The actual transformation of waste into recycled material belongs to the recycling process.
Key point
Module Alpha verifies additional requirements at an earlier stage of the chain. Its meaning must not be extended to imply legal approval of the final recycled material for food contact.
