AT A GLANCE

RecyClass is a voluntary certification scheme, rather than legislation. A requirement to hold a certificate may arise from a commercial relationship or the need to provide independently verified data requested by a customer.

RecyClass is not a regulation or a public authority

RecyClass schemes are voluntary third-party certification systems. This does not prevent certification from being required in practice by the market.

Where can a business requirement come from?

  • a customer's specification;
  • a contract or supplier approval conditions;
  • a brand owner's policy;
  • corporate group requirements;
  • the need to demonstrate material origin or recycled content;
  • requirements of another certification system or supply chain.

In these circumstances, certification may be voluntary in legal terms while being practically necessary to work with a particular customer.

RecyClass and PPWR

PPWR sets legal obligations for packaging, including recyclability, recycled content, minimisation and documentation. It does not establish a general rule that every company must hold a RecyClass certificate.

Certification can, however, provide organised and independently verified technical data that supports a company's compliance system.

When is certification most valuable?

It is particularly useful when a business partner needs evidence of material origin, independent process verification, confirmation of recycled content or a technical assessment of packaging design.

What if the customer simply says “we require RecyClass”?

Clarify:

  • which RecyClass scheme is required;
  • which site or material it should cover;
  • whether an additional module is required;
  • whether the customer expects a particular way of communicating the result;
  • whether the certificate must be issued within an accredited scope, if this matters contractually.

Key takeaway

There is no single general legal requirement to hold RecyClass certification. The need for certification depends on the applicable rules, customer requirements, the company's role in the value chain and the data that must be reliably demonstrated.
